Ingredients

3/4 c. Shortening
2 1⁄4 c. Sifted Flour Sifted cake flour
1 c. Sugar
1 t. Baking Powder
1 t. Salt
3⁄4 t. Baking Soda
3⁄4 t. Cinnamon
1⁄2 t. Cloves
3⁄4 c. Brown Sugar
1 c. Buttermilk
3 Eggs

Stir shortening just to soften. Sift in dry ingredients, except brown sugar. Add brown sugar and buttermilk and stir well until all flour is dampened. Then beat vigorously for 2 minutes. Add eggs. Beat 2 minutes more. Bake in 2 paper-lined 9″ round pans at 350° for 30-35 minutes (20 minutes for cupcakes).
